Tips for culture enthusiasts

1. Giovanni Segantini's legacy is omnipresent in the Engadin. The Segantini Museum in St. Moritz contains the artist's largest and most important collection. Most of the artist's works were created outdoors. The most prominent example: his Alpine Triptych, which depicts the three fundamental themes of human existence: life, nature, and death. To create the central image of the three-part painting, Segantini climbed the Schafberg above Pontresina in September 1899. The Segantini Hut is also located there.

2. A museum dedicated entirely to Engadin history. Built in 1906, the Engadin Museum is one of the oldest museums in Graubünden. Its 21 rooms contain a collection of historic state rooms and parlors, as well as objects and architectural elements from the Engadin. The pieces, collected by museum founder Riet Campell, are up to 500 years old.

3. An art stroll in St. Moritz. With the third-highest concentration of galleries in Switzerland, the Engadin is in no way inferior to major cities in terms of art offerings. Renowned galleries such as Hauser & Wirth and Vito Schnabel are drawn to the valley. All open galleries can be found here.

4. Friedrich Nietzsche spent seven summers in Sils. For the philosopher, the Chasté peninsula was the "most beautiful spot in the Engadin." The memorial stone at the southern tip commemorates his favorite spot. In the center of Sils, you can visit the Nietzsche House, where Nietzsche slept and wrote.

5. Since 2019, the village of Susch has housed a museum of contemporary art. The Muzeum Susch consists of four buildings that were once part of a rural monastery with a brewery. In addition to changing exhibitions, there is a permanent exhibition featuring works by Not Vital, Joanna Rajkowska, Mirko Baselgia, and Helen Chadwick.

6. A hike in the footsteps of the Giacometti family of artists in the Bregaglia Valley. The hike leads past the places where the artists Giovanni, Augusto, and Alberto Giacometti lived and worked. It connects several significant sites, such as the homes of the artists' families and their studios. The hike can be booked here.

7. Tarasp Castle towers majestically above the Lower Engadine. The castle's history dates back to 1040. Over the centuries, it changed hands several times until it was sold to the Engadin artist Not Vital in 2016. His art is exhibited in the historic rooms, always with consideration for the historic spaces and their furnishings, such as the largest private organ in Europe, which, with 2,700 pipes, is spread over three floors.

8. As majestic as the castle, just as inconspicuous is the Vital Park at the entrance to the village of Sent. Easily overlooked from the street, a 23,000 m² parkland lies behind a gate and a sculpture (a gift from Not Vital to his artist friend Ai Weiwei). Sculptures are scattered throughout the park. You can cross the valley on donkey heads or on an invisible bridge; there's a Murano glass house with a staircase. And the most spectacular feature: with the push of a button, a house appears—or disappears—in the grass. The park is open to the public every Friday from June to mid-October.
