The lake gets its name from the fragments of a Roman column at the mountain pass.

The lake owes its name to fragments of a Roman column found at the pass summit.

It lies in the Albula Alps on the Julier Pass at the northern foot of Piz da las Coluonnas. To the north of the pass rise Chüern Nair and Piz Valletta, while Piz Julier is located to the northeast. The lake lies entirely within the municipality of Silvaplana.

The border with the municipality of Surses runs along the watershed and is only about 35 meters north and east of the lake. Lej da las Coluonnas drains eastward via the Ova dal Vallun, the Inn River, and the Danube into the Black Sea.
