Eritrea´s youth know no future: buses take the high school graduates to the military camp directly after they receive their certificates, to be broken there under drill and torture. To escape this, 17-year-old Zekarias Kebraeb has only one way out: to flee to Europe. The trip to hell lasts four years and Zekarias only just survives. He suffers hunger, thirst and misery on his way through the African bush, the Sahara and across the Mediterranean. Arriving in Italy - the denied paradise - he thinks he has reached his destination. But he encounters rejection and resistance from the police and authorities. Once again he has to flee, and his wish to lead a normal life in freedom becomes a distant prospect?
The book "Hoffnung im Herzen, Freiheit im Sinn" (2011 by Bastei Lübbe) was written by the author Marianne Moesle. Together in conversation with Zekarias Kebraeb, they present their joint book and the story behind it.
