St. Moritz is considered the cradle of alpine winter tourism and of modern winter sports. No wonder two Olympic Winter Games took place here in 1928 and 1948. The 1928 Games were the first official Winter Olympics ever - the Chamonix Games (1924) only received this status in retrospect. As part of the Lausanne 2020 Youth Olympic Games, St. Moritz is staging four disciplines this January, making it the third Winter Olympic Games to be held here. This event is celebrated with eight illuminated snow sculptures at different locations all over St. Moritz. The Olympic venues Chamonix, Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Seefeld and Cortina d´Ampezzo, which cooperate with St. Moritz in the "Best of the Alps" association, also provide a sculpture each. These fascinating snow artworks are designed to serve as attractive interactive photo points for visitors, who can thus become part of the Olympic movement by sharing photos via social networks. All sculptures are open to the public until the end of February 2020.

The Youth Olympic Games are a top international sporting event for athletes aged 15 to 18. They combine sporting excellence with culture and education to create a festival encouraging young people to live the positive values of sport: respect for others, oneself and our environment, friendship between peoples and cultures, and sporting excellence.
