The Invention of Artistic Freedom in Sils Maria Jonathan Meese in Conversation with Christoph Graber Jonathan Meese is one of Germany's best-known artists. With "The Dictatorship of Art," he advocates a radical understanding of artistic freedom. He has been coming to Sils Maria, his personal place of power, for more than 20 years. Sils Maria was also an essential source of inspiration for Friedrich Nietzsche. In the summer of 1888, he was the first to call for the liberation of art from truth and morality—the first to do so with such clarity. Christoph Graber, who grew up in the Engadine, is Professor of Art Law at the University of Zurich. The conversation focuses on current tendencies toward the moralization and politicization of art and the question of how artists can defend themselves against this.
