Sils and the entire Upper Engadine are a seemingly inexhaustible source of inspiration. As a "secondary resident" for decades, he captures his "love for the Engadine" in watercolor and oil paintings. A feast of color—a feast of mountain and landscape painting. As a "secondary resident," he has embraced this high valley in almost five decades. His paintings open a window to his fascination with the Engadine.

After completing teacher training, he worked in the education sector for many years and, for more than three decades, has acquired, deepened, and developed his craft through painting weeks and courses at the School of Applied Arts, but primarily through self-study. He is fascinated by the essence of this landscape: the snow-capped mountains, the reflections in the Upper Engadin lakes, the interplay of light and shadow. His paintings reflect the calm and cold in winter, the splendor of color in summer and autumn. His admiration for famous Engadin painters is palpable. If symbolism also shapes his paintings, then perhaps it is this: capturing the beauty and diversity of this landscape on paper and canvas is, for him, a preservative impression – a call to preserve and protect this precious natural environment. While hiking, biking, or skating, Gerold Schoch is in search of the good picture, the "right" moment. What he captures on his smartphone is "processed" in his mind until the composition and color scheme take shape, creating the inner image he perceives. Only then does he paint. Gerold Schoch has exhibited his paintings several times in the Engadin: at the spa center, the former Hotel Guardalej, the Hotel Albana Silvaplana, and the Grond Café. He has also exhibited his works in the lowlands – most recently at the "Kulturschüür" in Männedorf and at the Swiss Art Expo in Zurich's main train station. Information about purchasing a painting: If you would like to purchase a painting, please contact the tourist office or Gerold Schoch. He would be happy to show you other paintings in Sils or in his studio in Männedorf.
